Groom and Groomsmen Attire | Inspiration for Southern Wedding

Although it’s no secret we all spend a LOT of wedding planning focusing on the bride, her girls, and the rest of the day’s details, the groom shouldn’t be left out! He’s equally important. As wedding photographers all over the Gulf Coast, we’ve seen a lot of great looks for the guys on the big day. So, we’re sharing some inspiration for your groom and groomsmen attire, and a few tips we’ve learned too!

Pops of Color for the Groom

Long gone are the days of ONLY black suits or tuxes for the groom. Bring a bit of color to your wedding day with a dyed suit jacket or custom made jacket. Whether it’s a subtle navy or a bolder color, this is one easy way to bring personality to your groom’s look. You can also mix up the colors for the groomsmen to distinguish who’s who – think dark blue for the groom and lighter for the groomsmen. And you don’t have to go full jacket in color – try adding a fun tie, vest, or pocket square for another pop of color!

Looking for another easy way to bring personality to your groom’s look? Get him custom made cufflinks! Traditionally, if he’s wearing a tux, they should match the shirt studs… but for a suit? Get as creative as you want! There’s some really awesome custom cufflinks – think monograms, characters, and even tiny beer glasses. Seriously, there’s something for everyone. And they make a great gift to your groom-to-be on the morning of your wedding day! groom adjusts sleeve of grey suit

Boutonnieres are the smaller floral arrangements that the groom and groomsmen wear on their jacket lapel. Historically, they are worn over the heart – but it doesn’t matter as long as everyone in the wedding party wears them the same way! For a lot of couples, the boutonniere flowers are similar to what’s in the bride’s bouquet, usually highlighting one flower type, like a single rose. We love photographing our groom’s moms pinning the boutonniere on for them – it’s such a special moment in the day!

While we’re talking about the groom and groomsmen attire… let’s discuss buttons. We see a lot of grooms trying to figure out how to wear their jackets correctly. So, here’s the guidelines we recommend so you’re comfortable (and your groomsmen are consistent!). 1 Button? Keep it closed! 2 buttons? Close the top button and keep the top button open when standing. 3 buttons? Always leave the bottom one undone… the other two can both be done, or just one if that’s more comfortable!

At the end of the day, there’s NO right or wrong when it comes to your groom and groomsmen attire. As you can see from the weddings we’ve photographed, there are so many great ideas – and all that really matters is that your guy (and his guys!) are comfortable. If you’re comfortable and representing your personal style, that’s all that really matters!
